Leucate beach, which was a former fishermen’s hamlet, has also kept the retro style of family seaside resorts. Further on and for history lovers who hire a bicycle while they wait for a less powerful Tramontane wind, at 16 km from here is the red-ochre brick Salses fortress. It is one of the oldest in France and has a magnificent keep. At sunset you will appreciate an array of incrediPlage de Port Leucateble colours in the middle of the Roussillon plain which it defended from successive Spanish invasions…
It is well worth taking a look at the Lac Marin marinas for the changing colours and the views over the west bank. You are better doing this on the water as opposed to by foot or on a bicycle. And it is indeed a surprise to see that natural, tranquil preserved locations which tourists visit little still exist!
Whether by fVue de loin ...oot or by boat, why not head north from Cap Leucate to the cove of La Franqui, which has never been a port but has always been a legend! This is a natural shelter when the wind blows from the east or south-east. There is not the slightest pier, just very uncertain berths when the Tramontane wind blows. The channel of the Palme lake just to the north is also worth visiting. However it is not accessible. There has been no shortage of development projects since the 13th century but there has never been the slightest outline even during the 1960s. We might as well be grateful as under the rocky massif of the cliff, the magnificent beach of the Cossoules extends over 8 km which is a delight for the sand yachts, speed-sails and other board sports which only have the wind to power them to go even faster, even higher and even stronger in the tough breezes which are very frequent in this area!
